Since 2017, Zhoushan Community Architecture Team has been upcycling different local materials with local villagers to build communal facilities in Zhoushan Village. In 2023, a building experiments base was established to continue material circulation exploration within the community. During the last 8 years, the team has been recycling building wastes; daily rubbish; collecting earth, plants; and transforming organic wastes, within 2km of the site. 70% of the entire building site, 14,000m2, were built with recycled material collected locally. This exploration, has demonstrated an alternative sustainable building approach for rural community development.
